This was the starting point of my "Ancient Gems" project. "Counting out time" was originally written in 1986 and first recorded by "SteNo" in 1988. Although the piano is very similar to the original, it is the use of marimbas (or rather synths masquerading as such) which most connects this version to the original. Despite only having a 4-track recorder in 1986 and needing to bounce the tracks several times, the recording by SteNo is very close to this one. DAW multitrack recording enabled me to properly separate the tracks and go slightly overboard in this version. Apart from being the sibling of “Kristallpalast” due to its stream of consciousness lyrics (so search for meaning at your own peril), this song was also an exercise in harmonic simplicity. I managed it in the verses (only one chord) but failed miserably in the chorus.
